Can you repair cast iron downpipes?

Well-maintained cast iron downpipes are strong, durable and resistant to corrosion, but what can be done to repair them if they do sustain damage? Luckily, many repairs can be carried out to keep your rainwater management system in prime condition.

Find out how to carry out a cast iron downpipe repair in more detail below.

Can holes in cast iron downpipes be fixed?

Yes! Leaks, cracks and holes in cast iron downpipes can be fixed. However, it’s worth assessing the extent of the damage first in order to decide whether it’s a DIY job to tackle or a more extensive repair best left to experts. Small leaks and holes in an isolated area, for example, are often much easier to fix yourself. However, if the entirety of your rainwater management system is in poor condition, calling on experienced professionals for repair or replacement is definitely a better option.

How do you repair a hole in a cast iron downpipe?

Cast iron downpipes can often be easily repaired because the system is made up of components. As a result, any damaged sections in need of replacement can be removed. Once you have removed the section of damaged cast iron downpipe (this will be a two-person job if you are removing a full 6ft length of pipe), you will be able to replace it with a suitable cast iron downpipe component.

While cast iron repair paste or plumber’s epoxy are touted as solutions to fill any holes in a cast iron rainwater management system, this can affect both the structural integrity and the aesthetic appeal of the guttering and downpipes – especially on older properties. We, therefore, recommend replacing the damaged component in its entirety in order to retain the authentic appearance and effectiveness of traditional and conservation properties.

How long do cast iron downpipes last?

You won’t have to worry about frequent repairs and replacements if you regularly maintain your rainwater management system. Repainting the exterior every 10-15 years helps to fend off damage, while the significant lifespan of cast iron ensures it lasts anywhere between 80 and 100 years.
