Installation Guidance for Side-Fix and Top-fix Rafter Brackets

We’ve produced installation guidance in printable PDFs and as videos to make it simple for customers to follow. The latest addition to these guides is for the Side-fix Rafter Bracket and Top-fix Rafter Bracket – essential options when your property doesn’t have a fascia board to attach the gutter to.

(And in the case of Rise & Fall brackets – you can watch that video here – when the rafter brackets are impractical).

Take our popular ‘Infinity’ rainwater system guttering, available in galvanised steel (and colour coated glav steel), natural zinc, copper and stainless steel. It’s deliberately designed with the inside edge sitting slightly higher than the outside edge, so rather than having guttering that’s level front to back, there is a very slight tilt away from the wall so that if the gutter should ever overflow in the event of an extreme downpour, the building is still protected.

These instructions should help with any rainwater system installation using these brackets, but the figures given for the recommended distance between brackets and the images used are specifc to the infinity system.

Installation Guidance for Infinity Galvanised Steel, Copper, and Zinc Guttering Side Fix Brackets:

For properties with no fascia board – but with rafters

  1. Fit the first bracket to the side of the first rafter on one outer edge of the roofline.
  2. Create a fall of 1:600 to 1:350 (max) tying string from the first bracket (i.e. the highest) at one end of the gutter run to the last bracket (i.e. the lowest one – the one nearest the outlet and the downpipe) at the other end.
  3. Fit all the other brackets with apporx. 915mm* centres along the ‘fall’.
(*This video should be a helpful guide for installing side-fix rafter brackets in general, but this figure applies specifically to Infinity guttering – you should refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for the ideal distance between brackets for any other brand of gutter).
N.B. Infinity gutters can be installed without a fall if this is preferred or necessary.
  4. Fit the gutter lengths into the brackets and fold over the brackets’ two ‘tabs’ to secure the gutter in place.

Always make sure to have a gutter union/connector (wherever you need to join two gutter lengths, an angle, or prefab outlet) near a bracket to support the joint, especially if you have elected not to use the ‘bead connectors’ which sit inside the front scroll or ‘bead’ of Infinity gutters, angles and pefab outlets – halfway into each across the join – offering additional support.
