Is cast iron guttering easy to remove?

Has your existing cast iron guttering system seen better days?

If it is showing significant signs of rust, damage, or corrosion, then removing it is probably the best option.

To ensure that task is completed smoothly, we identify which tools are required for this process, how to remove cast iron guttering, and whether you should attempt to remove this guttering yourself or contact a professional.

What do you need to remove cast iron guttering?

Due to the considerable weight of the material and the height of installation, preparation is key when it comes to removing cast iron guttering.

To help you prepare for the job, we’ve created a basic list of equipment that you should consider using to help you safely remove cast iron guttering from your property.

  • Two people and as many ladders (or two towers), or scaffolding with one person directly beneath the guttering who can lay down one end before walking to remove the other
  • Angle grinder
  • Cutting blade
  • Safety goggles
  • Appropriate dusk mask

Depending on the state and design of your cast iron guttering, you may need other tools and equipment to safely complete the job.

Rainclear recommends consulting with an experienced installer who can provide advice on your specific project or, even better, remove the cast iron guttering from the property on your behalf.

Ask a team member if we can recommend one nearby.

How to remove cast iron guttering

The best way to remove cast iron guttering is to work slowly section by section (starting with the guttering adjoined to the downpipe), undoing the bolts as you go.

If you find the bolts are stuck or rust has caused too much damage to the guttering, you can cut the bolts and sections of the guttering using an angle grinder with an appropriate blade.

Once you’ve cut through the bolts, the sections should be relatively easy to lift away from the adjoining guttering and downpipe.

Due to the nature of cast iron guttering, it’s best to gently lower any large sections to the ground to prevent shattering and any accidents.

Should you remove cast iron guttering yourself?

Heavy to lift and sometimes rusted into place, removing cast iron guttering yourself can be tricky, but it’s not impossible if there is at least two of you.

However, as mentioned above, we recommend seeking support from a specialist cast iron rainwater management system installer.
