What are the advantages of cast iron guttering?

No matter how long-lasting a building material might be, property decay and repairs are inevitable.

Despite cast iron being an incredibly robust guttering material with a long life span, eventually it will require repairs or replacement just like any other rainwater management system.

But should you stick with cast iron or opt for an alternative?

After helping countless customers choose the right metal guttering solution for their property, we understand the advantages of cast iron guttering systems better than anybody.

What are the benefits of choosing cast iron?

Let’s explore the advantages of cast iron guttering systems to help you decide whether this type of guttering is a good fit for your property.

Long-lasting

Cast iron guttering can last for a century, longer even, if inspected regularly and properly maintained. In the event that any leaks appear – for example, if downpipes are blocked and start overflowing at a joint, they become dislodged, or if cast iron pipes have rusted through, allowing water to discharge directly onto a wall – the damaged section can be repaired or replaced. This prevents the system from becoming ineffective and saves money in the long run because you’ll only need to replace a single section rather than the entire system.

Individual sections can be replaced

As mentioned above, another benefit of cast iron guttering is the way individual sections can be replaced. While minor damage, like small rust patches or leaking joints, can often be easily rectified by repainting or replacing sealant, areas with more significant damage typically need to be replaced. Opting for a guttering system consisting of individual components makes doing so an easier and less expensive job.

Value for money

If you’re tempted by the lower price tag of cast iron-effect uPVC guttering, then you may want to reconsider how much value you’re really getting for your money. Cast iron rainwater management systems can last up to 100 years, while uPVC typically does not. Cast iron guttering is often a more popular option for those with a bigger budget and a desire to maintain the authenticity of a character property.

Adds character

Ideal if you own an older heritage property in a conservation area or a listed building with plenty of character, cast iron guttering is a classic choice for properties like this in the UK (in fact, you may have no choice but to replace like-for-like if you live in a conservation area). Guttering made from cast iron quickly became the number one choice during the Victoria era, which is why its presence on a property can now be used to calculate its age. Traditionally, cast iron hoppers would also be imprinted with either a date or the family coat of arms, creating a characterful touch.

Strong and durable

Unlike uPVC rainwater management systems, cast iron gutters are known for their considerable strength and durability. Once they’ve been properly primed, painted and installed, they can withstand extremes of weather with ease. This ensures the cast iron guttering system remains where it’s supposed to even in wet and windy environments.

Can be painted

A particularly important advantage of cast iron guttering is the fact it can be painted in practically any colour – as long as you can find suitable paint in your desired shade. As a result, you’ll be able to match the colour of your cast iron guttering system to your window frames and doors, creating a striking exterior that can be easily updated or touched up every few years.

At Rainclear Systems, for example, we offer our customers a choice of primed or pre-painted cast iron guttering in either heritage black or one of seven standard RAL colours.

Alternatively, if you provide us with an RAL or BS shade, we can also supply cast iron guttering in one of these rarer colours, but they do have a longer lead time and will likely incur a surcharge .
